8th Grade Careers Class – Course Syllabus

Teacher: Mrs. Ruesink

Classroom: DTL Room

Class Hours: Thursday 3:00-3:45

Description:

This course is created to begin the student’s process of career planning within the middle school classroom. Students are allowed to dream, change their goals, experiment and learn about the various career and educational avenues. This career exploration class introduces students to the nature of the future they face and understand it and give them skills to explore how they can function successfully in it. Students will explore various post-high school avenues and understand the breadth of their options and opportunities, the implications of their choices, and the importance of education and planning. Students will develop a positive attitude about their roles within the career work-force and learn the necessity and the value of schooling for attaining their future goals.

Method of Instruction:

I believe the best way for those in the class, including me, is to learn through a variety of methods. There is not a textbook required for the class as I will provide you with all the necessary materials as the class progresses. I encourage you to get the most out of this class: ask questions, get involved in activities, bring up interesting information, and provide feedback. Below is a list of the various learning activities that will be used throughout the year.

Play acting, written exercises, research projects, structured game activities

Class discussions, small group work, assessments, online career exploration programs

Lectures, presentations from community members
